On a recent freelance application, I was asked to describe something that made me unique. I was asked to be creative and provide something that might catch the employer's eye. Here's what I came up with:
I'm currently learning what makes me unique as a writer, that being my writer's voice. I used to think it was something I had to craft, like plot twists or paragraph transitions. I would wrestle every word of a piece into an order I felt might impress the unseen Literati. And they were never impressed. Imagine my surprise when I finally stopped crafting and listened to the stream of thoughts trailing behind my ideas, or heard what came out of my mouth as I described them to other people. I mean, the word "voice" is even in the phrasing; I'm not sure what other clues I needed. Years of practice and an expensive degree later, and I come to this realization on my own.
